Academic and Research Libraries Division (ARLD) Board meeting

Minnesota Library Association (MLA) Annual Conference 2006,

St. Cloud Convention Center, St. Cloud, MN,

September 27-29, 2006

Minutes

ARLD board members and guests present numbered approximately 25.

Chair Victoria Peters called the meeting to order.

ARLD Board Members for 2006 and 2007 were introduced.  Members whose terms are ending were thanked for their contributions, especially Karen Docherty for her long and stellar service and leadership. Elected Board positions and their duties were described.  Volunteer board positions were also discussed: the web coordinator, the coordinator for ARLD Dialogs, Communications, and the Legislative Liaison.  People were encouraged to run for office, or volunteer.

ARLD Communications venues were summarized, including the ARLD Website (http://mnlibraryassociation.org/ARLD%202005.htm ); the "About" page with board members, meeting minutes, and the Board manual; and the new ACRL blog at http://arldmn.blogspot.com/ .

ARLD’s list of events and activities for the year was summarized.  Highlights included

·         ARLD Dialogue, "Culturally Competent Librarianship" was held March 1, 2006 at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus.  Presenters were Phuoc Tran (U of M Libraries/Hennepin County Public Libraries) and Kim Clarke (U of M Libraries).

They have an ongoing blog at http://blog.lib.umn.edu/clark078/ccl/

Kate McCready reported on the recruitment efforts undertaken this year, including designing a letter and flyer to send to library schools in the area (Lynne Weber) suggesting that students become involved with ARLD.

Robin Ewing reported on current legislative issues and platforms, and the work of the MLA Legislative Committee. She was heartily thanked for her excellent representation and for being our “academic voice” as Legislative Liaison.  She will continue in this role for the short term, but is now Chair-elect for the board so we need a new representative in this role.

Future events were described.

1) Another ARLD Dialog may be planned for the upcoming year- probably a lunch gathering. ARLD Dialogues are sponsored (by ARLD), informal lunch time gatherings to focus on issues of interest to librarians (e.g. instruction).  They are a good way to bring librarians with like interests together and could be held anywhere in the state, not just in the Twin Cities.

2) ARLD Day 2006 will be April 30th at the Earle Brown Heritage Center in Brooklyn Park, MN.  Call for session proposals will go out in February.  More information will be forthcoming on the ARLD Events page (http://mnlibraryassociation.org/ARLD/Events.htm ).

3) The ACRL conference will be held in Baltimore, MD in April 2007 (see http://www.acrl.org/ala/acrl/acrlevents/baltimore/baltimore.htm

ACRL has developed an advocacy toolkit.  Advocacy expert Camile Alire is presenting at this (MLA 2006) conference and all were encouraged to attend her session.

4) ARLD will be sponsoring sessions again for MLA in fall 2007.  We will be calling for proposals late in spring 2007.

The ARLD Board has instituted a new "Academic Librarian of the Year Award," with the recipient to be recognized at the MLA Awards Banquet each year [inaugural recipient is Bill DeJohn, MINITEX Director].    The award is intended to recognize academic librarians at ALL levels who meet one or more of the criteria (see ARLD website for details).  We will be calling for nominees for the award at ARLD Day in the spring, in addition to putting an announcement out to the MLA and ARLD listservs.

Bill DeJohn reported on the Memo/MLA Information Literacy group that is meeting (sporadically) about info lit issues.  The group represents publics, academic, K-12, and multitype Libraries in Minnesota . They are involved in developing a common language for talking about Info . Lit. between library types, and in creating online tutorials across the community to  raise awareness among their constituents. MINITEX has adapted the Assignment Calculator tool for use in K-12 media centers, primarily middle school level.

Jim Newsome, incoming ARLD Chair, called for feedback on several items:

People were thanked for attending, and the meeting adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Linda Eells,

ARLD Secretary
