1. The minutes from the 10/18/02 meeting were approved and the agenda was adopted.
2. Old Business
Conference Wrap-Up (Karen Fischer) thank you
notes have been sent out. Evaluations from three sessions are still missing. No
demographic (library type) information concerning conference attendees yet
available. Written guidelines for program planning from MLA would be helpful.
ARLD tends to offer more sessions than are accepted and is quite organized in
its planning. It would be helpful to know how many sessions are available and
what the selection criteria are. Finding a joint sponsor in the planning
process is a good way to get a program in the conference and promotes diversity
in the audience.
Instruction Dialogues (Julie Kelly) first
Instruction Dialogue was a success! This type of program seems to fill an
educational and professional networking niche. There were 12 people plus
attendees. People enjoyed the informal conversation and practical tips. The
introductions were conducted in pairs and took perhaps too much time although
it was a good ice-breaker. Perhaps future sessions should begin eating during
the introductions. A section on the ARLD website for publicity was suggested.
It could include a schedule of past and upcoming Dialogues and their topics and
allow members to suggest topics or offer to host. Possible hosts and sessions in the works:
Mankato (Jim Capoun); Southwest State (Kathleen Ash); Moorhead (Brittany
Goodman); UM Duluth (Liz Benson Johnson); Metro State (Nick Dimassis is
interested in presenting). Finally, we
all expressed our thanks to Dixie Howe-Noyes (in absentia) for the brilliant
concept underlying the Instruction Dialogues.
ARLD Day Planning will rename it ARLD Day
instead of ARL Day. It will occur on April 25, 2002, 10:30am 3:30pm at the
University of Minnesota Library at Duluth. Lunch will be buffet style and
poster sessions will be in the ballroom. Program ideas:
Games Academics Play The cultural differences between librarians and faculty members. Jane Ann will ask Lars Christiansen from Augsburg to participate, perhaps as the sole presenter for the session. Jane Ann will also ask Terri Fischel and Liz Johnson if they have any ideas.
Computing Services in Libraries: Different Languages, Different Cultures Should computer services and libraries be the same unit, challenges and controversies. Julie Kelly will take the leadership on this session. Possible speakers: Kristi Tornquist, Joan Roca, Chris Pegg (Augsburg).
Generation Differences in Libraries BI for younger audiences, recruitment, preserving institutional memories. Post this topic to the listserve, solicit speakers. Look for speakers working with first year experience programs to talk about expectations and characteristics of freshmen.
Library Organizational Structures in an Age of Change Jane Ann and Joe Mount will work on this topic.
Posters Laurel in charge.
Elections nominees will be passed on to the
MLA office so that the ballots can go out quickly. We discussed ways to
encourage active involvement in ARLD other than being a board member. Some
suggestions: starting a program committee for MLA and ARLD Day, logistical
support for conference.
ACRL 2005 Planning no news to report.
