MLA History

MISSION STATEMENT

The Minnesota Library Association is an association of library supporters, representing all types of libraries by helping them accomplish together what none can do alone. MLA supports Minnesota libraries by facilitating educational opportunities, supporting strong ethical standards, providing legislative assistance and fostering connections between the library community and various constituencies.

History

MLA began 1891, but was not officially incorporated until 1967. William Watts Folwell, the first President, served as President of the Association for nine years. Over one hundred Presidents have followed in his footsteps. MLA members represent many kinds of libraries and library staff, including public, academic, school, special, multi-type, institutional, and others. Friends of the library, trustees, and many other community members as well as corporate friends help comprise the current 1,100 members.

How Does MLA Work?

The Board of Directors, elected by the membership, provides leadership to the organization. The membership subunits--Divisions, Sections, and Round Tables--carry out MLA activities. MLA staff includes an Executive Director, Office Manager, and a Lobbyist.
