| The Reference/Instructional Librarian reports to the Information Literacy Librarian and is a member of 3 teams including: reference, collection development, and information literacy. As such, the librarian will be responsible for: | |
| Reference service to Walden students, faculty, and staff by phone, email and web form. All librarians participate in answering general reference questions as well as specializing in a curricular area. All librarians may be required to work reference shifts on nights and weekends. | |
| Analyze current collections and recommend electronic resources for purchase; participate in special collection projects in their fields of expertise; regularly review document delivery/interlibrary loan/permissions lists for purchase recommendations; procure pricing information; meet with vendors regarding new products; work with vendors to resolve database problems; select and add web sites to library pathfinders in field of expertise; act as liaison to faculty and the appropriate curricular departments. | |
| Teach library skills sessions at face-to-face residencies; create tutorials, teach webinars, advise students individually; work with course developers to incorporate information literacy into Walden courses. Travel is required for this position. Approximately one trip per month of 5 days’ duration. | |
| Requirements: | • ALA accredited master’s degree • At least one year of online academic library reference experience including email, IM or web • Experience searching the major academic databases • Expert-level research ability in online databases • Experience teaching information literacy skills including the use of online databases • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision |

Located in Marshall, MN, the city is a growing regional center, leading southwestern MN in industry, education and technology. The Marshall Lyon County library serves a population of 21,605 from the main library in Marshall, two branch libraries, and via an outreach service and is a member of the Plum Creek Regional Public Library System. Construction of a new 23,000 square foot library building (Phase I) will begin in the summer of 2010 There is also an active Friends of the Library group which raises additional funds for the library. | Description: | Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) invites applications for a fixed term, full time Librarian for the 2010/2011 academic year. SMSU, one of seven universities in the Minnesota System, provides a diverse curriculum of liberal arts and selected professional programs. The University is located in the town of Marshall (pop. 13,000), in rural southwest Minnesota, 155 miles from Minneapolis/St. Paul and 90 miles from Sioux Falls, SD. |
| The faculty librarian will provide leadership and expertise as a team member in the Technical Services unit of the SMSU Library. Responsibilities include management of the library website, maintaining web interfaces and developing new web initiatives; management of and technical support for library software (Libdata, EZproxy, OCLC Link Manager, etc.); and work with the ILS (ALEPH). The Librarian will provide information literacy instruction sessions. Responsibilities will also include service at the Reference Desk during scheduled hours, including some evening hours and weekend days. The librarian will participate in professional activities and will be an active member of the library management team. | |
